Letter to Supporters

Hello! It is the day before the election and I've had a chance to reflect on the last six months. Last night, I sent this email out to my supporters which I share on the blog in an attempt to make clear my message. Please don't hesitate to email me with any questions that you might have. I'll be checking email late tonight and getting back to you!

Thank you!

Dear Supporters,

I want to express my sincere appreciation for your time and effort on behalf of my campaign. Your support and friendship have meant a great deal to me throughout this process. As many of you are aware, the election is Tuesday and I would like to take a moment to reiterate why I am running for Gilbert Town Council.

This is a critical time for our town. I have based my campaign on three principles that I believe will sustain Gilbert families both now and in the future.

Fiscal Responsibility
Due to massive debt and overspending in both the private and public sector, it is imperative that we not allow Gilbert to fall into a cycle of spending more than we have. Tax dollars should first pay for essential services including police, fire, streets and water. Many moved to Gilbert for a certain quality of life that we want to see maintained. We must cut frivolous spending and create priorities in our community. This can be done by eliminating waste and a line by line analysis of the budget so that the taxpayers of Gilbert know that their money is being spent in the most responsible way possible.

Economic Growth

Gilbert is a town with tremendous potential for growth particularly in the area of commercial development. In order to successfully draw businesses to Gilbert, we must streamline processes and enhance the image of Gilbert in the business realm. This is accomplished by marketing Gilbert effectively, making it easier for businesses to thrive here and ultimately becoming a help to business rather than a hindrance.

Communication

In order for government to function properly, it is necessary for elected officials to communicate effectively with the citizens, employees, neighboring communities and businesses. My communication skills will help the town function effectively, draw new people and businesses and engage the families of Gilbert. Quality communication is essential to Gilbert’s ability to thrive now and in the future.

Your vote in this election matters. We need a leader who will represent the best interests of Gilbert. I have the skills and qualities that are necessary to lead Gilbert into the future and to continue to create a place where families are successful.

Once again, I appreciate your support and would ask that you encourage others to vote for me, Jenn Daniels, on Tuesday.

All the best,
Jenn

Last My Turn Article

I submitted this final "My Turn" article to the Arizona Republic last week. Thought I'd share it with you to make clear my position on several current issues.

While Gilbert has much to be proud of we must also recognize that there is tremendous work to be done. Gilbert is on the brink of remarkable opportunity and it will take council members with vision and leadership to tackle present challenges without compromising the future. It will take council members with great communication skills, an ability to prioritize the community’s needs and someone who understands the challenges that the people of Gilbert face everyday. I have a strong work ethic, the skills necessary to communicate clearly and effectively and I have the ability to draw people together to accomplish our goals.

Our priorities for our community must include maintaining and improving public safety, improving streets and traffic flow, preserving current infrastructure including parks and town facilities and improving business processes that will allow Gilbert to be poised for growth now and in the future. It is essential that Gilbert open and maintain lines of communication with the citizens, keep our high quality of life through sustaining and properly managing our open spaces, properly manage your tax dollars and engage the young families in our town so that there is a continuum of leadership and a legacy for our children and grandchildren in the years to come.
A vote for Jenn Daniels is a vote for a fresh perspective, vision for the future and a voice for the people. www.voteforjenn.com

The Countdown Continues...

13 days till the election
:)

Sheeesh!!!

Last I checked 29 was the age of a completely functioning adult. Plus, I've had a birthday recently and so now the number 30 gives me LOTS more credibility. And so I've been led to my next article rebuttal. This time in response to an AZ Republic columnist named Mike McClellan - which to his credit actually gave permission for me to respond to his column. In a nutshell, Mr. McClellan claims that I believe in affirmative action and so believe that I DESERVE to be granted the office of councilmember. Nothing could be farther from the truth - and so I include my rebuttal not only to drill holes in his argument, but to share with all why I have worked so hard to be included in this process. Here it is:

Throwing around words like “affirmative action” is an attempt to deflect attention from the real issue: who has the ability to lead and inspire? As a candidate for town council, I am not asking for special treatment or a free pass.

It is unfortunate that some have criticized me for making comments on my website about my young family. My family is a large part of who I am. That is my life and because of it, I have a unique perspective of the needs of other families just like mine who make up the majority of Gilbert residents.

Despite the facts, some continue to state that I will bring nothing to the council except my age and that I am not "qualified by experience, or ability, or achievement." I strongly disagree. I have the ability to bring people together, to listen to all sides of an argument and then use my skills, knowledge and perspective to decide what is best. My experience includes my financial background, owning a successful small business, serving on the board of a non-profit, participating in an appointed position in my assembly district and involving myself in a leadership role on several state ballot initiatives. As a leader, I will work hard to keep taxes low, to help make Gilbert a place where businesses want to come, to open and maintain lines of communication, to keep our quality of life high through sustaining and properly managing our open spaces and I will be fiscally responsible by not increasing spending during this economic downturn on new, non-essential projects. Finally, I will engage the young families in our town so that there is a continuum of leadership and a legacy for our children and grandchildren in the years to come.

Let it be known...

I wrote this in response to a comment left on AZ Republic yesterday. While normally I'd like to just ignore this kind of negativity - there were so many blatant lies that I felt it was important to defend myself. It is unfortunate that someone would intentionally be so misleading.

Here's a link if you'd like to read the entire article and comments:
http://www.azcentral.com/community/gilbert/articles/2009/04/23/20090423gr-councilforum0424.html

Due to the blatant inaccuracies in msequira’s comment – I want to clarify my background and position on various issues.

I have been married and living in Arizona since 2000 – for the past 9 years, I have been actively participating in life. I have graduated from college, worked for three years in the private sector and owned my own successful business for three years. I have served on the board of a non-profit organization for five consecutive years. I have been actively involved in church and organizing youth programs. I have participated in ballot initiatives for two consecutive elections and most importantly I have been raising my three sons. Since when is being a Mom considered unemployed or “unemployable”? Msequira is suggesting that there is a quantifiable number that automatically equals experience – we all know that logical thinking refutes this. Age does not quantify experience.

Parks, recreation and open spaces are part of what attracted many of us to Gilbert. They are necessary and they definitely need to be part of our town. My position on local government funding of said programs is that we need to take care of the parks and programs that are currently in place. This unstable economic time is simply not the best time to open new parks and new programs until they can be funded responsibly.

Public servants throughout history have come in all shapes and sizes – there is no checklist that must be met to be able to serve one’s community. One must have desire and I have that. I bring with that desire a skill set that is imperative to our Town at this point in its history. I am not here to criticize the other candidates. All are great individuals who have led honorable lives. But I believe that my experience is what is needed for the next four years.

For the record, msequira has not asked me any of the questions listed in his comment. Any answers he has conjured are his own assumptions and NOT based on my statements or position on the issues.

If any reader has any questions or would like to discuss this further, please do not hesitate to contact me directly at jenn@voteforjenn.com I am always available to discuss my position and record with the people of Gilbert.

TEXT MESSAGE CAMPAIGN BEGINS!

In an effort to connect to voters on a variety of levels, our campaign has launched a TEXT MESSAGE CAMPAIGN designed to do just that. To participate,

TEXT JENN TO 25866*

Here's the press release that we sent out to get the ball rolling:

Jenn Daniels, candidate for Gilbert Town Council, added a new layer of depth to her campaign’s media and get-out-the-vote strategy.

Today, the Jenn Daniels campaign enlisted the services of Gilbert-based mobile-marketing company, Blumo, which utilizes text messaging technology to market rapid and widespread notices to potential customers. Blumo’s clients include such large accounts as State Farm and Vestar.

Daniels’ campaign will now utilize this same technology in the weeks leading up to the election as a means to inform voters of her position on issues and the importance of participating in the town election.

“Text messaging is a form of media that has been used in national elections but is not widely used on the local level. I felt it was another way that I could communicate with voters and spread my message to the people of Gilbert,” said Jenn Daniels.

So Much to Do...So Little Time

Many people have wondered why we are having another election - "Didn't we just vote?" is a common question. Your vote in March was for the Primary Election which narrowed the field of council candidates from seven to four. We now move on to the GENERAL ELECTION on May 19th and the two candidates who receive the most votes will be seated on the Gilbert Town Council.

Early ballots will be mailed to voters on April 16th - which amazingly enough - is in just 11 days. Since 75% of the people who voted in the Primary Election voted using their EARLY BALLOTS - we have LOTS of work to do in the next two weeks. This is not to say that we won't be working hard ALL THE WAY to election day on May 19th :) EVERY VOTE COUNTS, especially in an election of this size, so regardless of whether you vote early at the town offices, through a mail-in ballot or on Election Day, GET OUT AND VOTE!!!

As a side note, we ordered more yard signs - if you'd like one in your yard or at your place of business, just drop me an email at jenn@voteforjenn.com and I'll bring one right over!

My Turn Article

All of the candidates were asked to write a new 500-word article for the Gilbert Republic. Mine was included in today's paper.

It is always a challenge to take a brief snapshot in words - but I feel good about the message and the energy I was able to convey. Let me know what you think by sending me an email jenn@voteforjenn.com and don't forget to include any questions that you might have!

Thank you!

Don Skousen - A True Community Leader

I'd like to express appreciation to Don Skousen for the MANY contributions he has made to our community. Undoubtedly, Mr. Skousen has had a hand, either directly or indirectly, in the life of every Gilbert citizen for the last 35 years. While I don't know Don well, I have had some good chats with him over the last several months and it has been an honor to get to know him. I wish Don and his family all the best and I appreciate the contributions and the sacrifices that both he and his family have made on our behalf. Don Skousen is a true community leader.

Sundays Start the Week Right!

I love Sundays. Sunday is such a perfect day to sit down, re-evaluate, organize and complete a thought or two. When I am able to sit quietly and think clearly for a few moments, I think I have a better perspective and always a greater appreciation for both people and opportunities.

While this week is going to be fun-filled and action-packed, I'm glad to have had the opportunity to take a step back today and recognize that this opportunity before me will never come again.

And so operation "Work My Little Heart Out" continues...

Week is FLYING BY!

We've had an ultra successful week so far - still TWO more working days to go - and I don't see us slowing down.

Today I attended the Arizona Management Society Lunch - the speaker was from APS and shared with us the science, alternatives and challenges associated with renewable energy. An absolutely fascinating lecture. Here is the shortened summary of what I learned:

APS is very interested in renewable energy disbursement. They provide incentives to both customers and corporations in the form of a cost percentage return and they will buy from the customer unused wattage. (There is also a tax credit available through the government). The speaker said that solar water heaters have the quickest investment return. The problem with whole house solar power is that the technology is still relatively new, is being improved upon at a rapid rate and is still fairly expensive - similar problem to computers or plasma tv's or digital cameras - but that eventually nearly every home in Arizona will be powered by solar energy. They are actively searching out companies and municipalities that would be willing to partner with them to accomplish the goals set forth by the AZ Corporation Commission.

One of the most interesting things was the explanation of why we will always still need natural gas or coal, for example, as an energy source. Simply because solar, nuclear and wind powers can't be "ramped up" when energy demands are at their highest point. Rather those alternate forms of energy provide for the base energy needs and then in order to reach demand at peak times, natural gas or coal can be added to fulfill that need.

That's obviously shortened and condensed version - definitely worthwhile.

Busy Monday = A Good Kickoff to the Week

I'm writing this at 11:26pm - simply because I spent most of the day meeting with people in and around Gilbert and most of the evening answering emails, setting up appointments and planning for the rest of a very BUSY week. It's a good sign that this week will be a GREAT ONE!

FYI - tomorrow night, March 24th at 7:00pm (50 E. Civic Center Dr.) - the Town Council has a packed agenda. This may be one meeting that you don't want to miss. We've got Mother Nature's Farm, Edu-Prize elementary and a few other "hot button" items. If you can't make it down to council chambers, check out the meeting online or through Cox Cable Channel 11.

It's going to be a GREAT week!!!!

THE GAME PLAN!

Four months into this process and I am still fascinated by it all. We have been working extremely hard behind the scenes to be prepared to CHARGE FORWARD during the next 58 days (but whose counting, right?). Plans are in place - some of the best people are helping - the calendar is filling up - and we've got a momentum and energy that keeps us focused and working hard.

Here we go!!!

TOMORROW IS ELECTION DAY!

Hard to believe that tomorrow is already TUESDAY, MARCH 10TH - ELECTION DAY!!!

I've taken just a few minutes to reflect on what an amazing experience this has been and how grateful I am for the opportunities that I've had over the last several months. I'm in awe really...

I still maintain that the single BEST thing about living in Gilbert is THE PEOPLE! Running for town council has given me the chance to meet so many amazing people - from all corners of the town, all walks of life, all ages, all classes, all religions and all backgrounds. Collectively, we make up the greatest town in Arizona and I hope to be given the chance to represent you - to be your voice - on the town council.

Regardless of whether I am YOUR candidate or not, I would encourage all eligible voters to take a few minutes out of your day tomorrow and participate in what might be considered one of the greatest benefits to the American people - the chance to participate in an honest and fair election. We are one fortunate people!

Just a few tips:

If you have an early ballot and have not yet mailed it in, take your early ballot to ANY polling place. You do not have to wait in line, just walk up and drop it in the box.

For Clarity

Bear with me...this might be a long one.

There have been targeted accusations from some candidates running for Gilbert Town Council who claim that “now is not the time for on the job training” and that experience is the only thing that matters in our local government. With all due respect to the great sacrifice some have made on behalf of our country and our community, I respectfully argue that now is not the time for the same old way of thinking in Gilbert. Our Town is facing new challenges and obstacles and we cannot approach those challenges while thinking the way we’ve always thought. The definition of insanity is to do the same thing over and over again but expect different results. It’s time for Gilbert to grow up. Our local government needs a fresh perspective and strong voices to speak out on behalf of the people.

Under our current leadership, relationships between neighbors, other communities and the county have been strained. Local businesses have grown tiresome of the challenges that are continually put before them by the Town that says they support them. Residents want steady and clear communication from the town – not just as a courtesy but because citizen input is genuinely valued. The people of Gilbert deserve something more from their elected officials. They deserve to have elected officials who sound an alarm when property rights, the rights of business owners and the rights of taxpayers are being infringed upon. The people of Gilbert deserve leaders who will be accountable for decisions, who pay attention to detail and who put service above self.

We don’t need elected officials with experience when that experience includes spending tax-payer money frivolously, dangling permits in front of local business owners or ignoring the voice of the people. Is that the kind of “experience” that will lead our Town to be the premier community in the valley?

Some of my opponents have said that they represent family values quite well. While I do not doubt their commitment to their own families, the Gilbert they raised their children in is very different from the Gilbert today. I can best represent families in Gilbert because I see the challenges you face every day in my own life. I understand the difficulties you encounter because every day, my life intersects yours.

Some want to dwell on my age as an example of my experience. I don’t think that age defines a leader. A true leader exhibits character, commitment, humility and respect for others. A true leader is someone who works tirelessly and does it not for accolades or awards but because they believe they can make a positive difference within their sphere of influence.

It’s time for new leadership. It’s time for fresh ideas, fresh voices and a fresh perspective. Vote for Jenn Daniels on March 10th.

Another Great Day!

Had a Meet & Greet tonight at the Anderson's home - they were wonderful hosts and I appreciate so much their efforts on my behalf. Also spent a few minutes at the last Gilbert Budget Open House at the Southeast Regional Library. All in all, another great day!

The Campaign Goes Marching On

No pun intended...but we are fast approaching the March 10th Primary Election. Have I mentioned how much I have LOVED getting to meet so many of you?!! I can't help but be excited about all of the amazing people I have met lately.

I just answered a bunch of questions from people in the community that I thought I'd share. I hope it helps you to get to know me a little better.

What do you consider your top 3 priorities currently in life, and in what order?
Top 3 priorities in life are 1) family, 2) service to others and 3) faith

Do you support the new government stimulus package?
I do not support the new stimulus package for a variety of reasons - 1) I don't believe that our elected officials should EVER vote on something they have not read or studied. 2) From what we've heard, there are billions of dollars going to programs that will not actually stimulate our economy and the distribution is being spread out over the next several years. 3) I'm not about leaving debt on the shoulders of our children and grandchildren. It is an unnecessary burden.

What would be the main reason I would vote for you?
Vote for me because I have energy, enthusiasm, a fresh perspective, financial experience, strong family values and a strong commitment to work hard on behalf of Gilbert citizens. Vote for me because I communicate well, work great in a team and will always put the people first.

More to come...

CRAZY BUSY WEEK!

This week has been an absolutely crazy, busy, FUN week for the campaign.
Here's the snapshot:

Wednesday: Met with some amazing people from the Gilbert Senior Center and Community Services of Arizona where I learned so much about the services provided in the community through these organizations. I learned about their successes and their challenges and it definitely inspired me to reach out to those in need. Later that evening, I met with some great people from the Seville neighborhood in South Gilbert. Nate & Lalani Hunsaker hosted a Meet & Greet and invited many of their neighbors. It was a great success and I am grateful to Nate & Lalani for reaching out to their friends and neighbors and for allowing me the chance to share my vision for Gilbert with them.

Thursday: Bright and early on Thursday morning, I meet with the Gilbert Rotary - another fantastic organization in Gilbert that provides its members many opportunities to serve in the community. The Rotary motto is "Service Above Self" and it was evident by the energy and volunteer spirit that here in Gilbert, they take that to heart. It was such a pleasure being with some of Gilbert's best. Thursday evening, I attended the beginning of the Leadership Forum Workshop "Finding Your Place in the Community" and I had a chance to see some of the great things that individuals all over Gilbert have been contributing. Lots of organizations were in attendance including United Food Bank, Big Brothers, Big Sisters and the Gilbert Senior Center. Again, so inspiring to be amongst people who everyday, devote their time, energy and talents into making Gilbert a better place. To top off the day, Jaime & Dana Rogers hosted a Meet & Greet and I loved getting to know their neighbors and friends. The people in attendance had so many thoughtful questions and I enjoyed talking to them and getting to know them.

Friday: Interview with SEVRAR (Southeast Valley Regional Association of Realtors) went well as they asked many questions specifically relating to Real Estate transactions. So great to hear from people who ALL take a vested interest in Gilbert. I also had the great privilege of going on a Ride-Along with the Gilbert Police Department. My husband was supremely jealous and I learned so much about the many hats that the Gilbert Police wear as they work so hard to protect our town. Saturday evening I was lucky enough to have a Meet & Greet hosted by State Rep. Andy Biggs and his wife Cindy. Great crowd, fantastic dialogue and such tasty treats!

Saturday: Spent a while handing out postcards and fixing street signs with my husband and kids. The weather couldn't have been better. Saturday evening, I was so lucky to attend a Meet & Greet hosted by Greg & Sharon Slater. Talk about fun!!! I met some terrific people who love Gilbert and want to see Gilbert remain a family-friendly, economically sustainable home for all. I was reminded why I felt that running for town council was so important.

Sunday: So glad that Sunday is the day of REST and of FAMILY. :)

Next week is looking to be off-the-charts busy again and I'm looking forward to it!

Just a quick reminder - you may have already received your EARLY BALLOT in the mail - so fill it out and get it mailed in as soon as you can! Also, MONDAY, FEBRUARY 9th is the last day to register to vote for the March 10th Primary. Visit the website for more information.
Have a great week everyone!!!

East Valley Tribune Forum

We just finished up the East Valley Tribune Forum and I always think they are great - when they're over! In all seriousness, it is wonderful to have an outlet that allows for candid dialogue about town issues. I hope that it allows the people of Gilbert the opportunity to get to know the candidates based on personality, issues, compatibility and capture of visual of strengths and weaknesses.

Click HERE to watch last week's Arizona Republic Forum. When the link to the Tribune's forum is available, I'll add it.

Thanks again for all of your support - you have been tremendous!

Pancake Breakfast - Flat Out Success!

We had our second pancake breakfast on Saturday - this time at the Wallin's house. We had a great turnout, some delicious pancakes (thank you Firefighter Daryl!) and we gave out lots and lots of yard signs and bumper stickers. Let's hear it for the Arizona weather which has been so cooperative despite the fact that historically, it always rains at least one day during the FBR Open!

I hope there is some excitement buzzing about the upcoming Election on MARCH 10. (That was just another little reminder :) EARLY BALLOTS WILL BE MAILED ON FEBRUARY 9th!

Many people have asked how I think I'm going to be successful in this race ... it comes down to ONE little thing that makes a MAJOR difference. That difference is YOU! When you take the time to tell 5 of your friends, we hope that those friends will tell another 5 and so on. People are more likely to vote on a personal recommendation than by any other means.

So tell some friends to VOTE for JENN DANIELS (or "Vote for MOM!" as my little E likes to say) - I know that together, we CAN have a positive, pro-family voice on our Town Council.

Cottage Meeting

We had a great cottage meeting last night at the Cox home. I am so glad that I was able to participate and I truly enjoyed meeting more amazing people! Thank you so much Cox family - I so appreciated your hospitality and you were great hosts!

Campaign Update

I've had a great week that I'd love to catch you up on...

Last Thursday I had a Meet & Greet hosted by Pat in the Trilogy neighborhood. It was a wonderful opportunity to hear concerns and answer questions from the residents of the 55 and better community. These great people have a wealth of information and come from a variety of places and backgrounds. I appreciated their ideas and truly enjoyed my time with them. Many thanks to Pat for hosting and for all who attended.

Monday evening the Gilbert Small Business Alliance hosted all of the mayoral and town council candidates at a forum held at Warren's Jazz Bistro (SW corner of Val Vista & Williams Field) - great location and good food by the way. Each candidate had five minutes to introduce themselves, explain why they are running for town council and share their goals and vision for the town. The Gilbert Small Business Alliance did a fantastic job putting on a quality event for their members and the best part was getting to mingle with some amazing people - people who put a personal investment into Gilbert by owning a small business in our community. Here are the three things that I think are crucial to Gilbert:

1) Budget - its time for the town to tighten its belt, define the priorities in our community and make a clear statement between the wants and needs in Gilbert. I believe strongly that the role of government is to protect and preserve the freedoms that are innately ours. The top priorities in our town should be police, fire, streets and water. We must eliminate the waste within our town and focus on the needs.

2) Transparency within our town government and clear communication with the citizens. We don't just need good communication - we need good communicators. We need someone willing to sift through the information and convey to the general public the good, the bad and the ugly. Our local government must be held accountable for decisions that they make with our tax dollars.

3) Family Values - As a young mother, I see this town from a different perspective than the other council candidates. I want to maintain and then enhance the family-oriented community we call home - this is the reason that so many people came to Gilbert! Everything that comes before town council needs someone to ask, "Is it true? Is it right? Is it good for the Gilbert family?" I want to be that voice and I have the judgement and common sense to make the best choices for Gilbert families.

Finally, tonight was the Arizona Republic Town Council Candidate Forum - a 90-minute question and answer session moderated by the AZ Republic's East Valley Editorial Board. I was excited about the format - questions followed by 1 minute answers from each of the candidates. The questions were thoughtful and gave me a chance to share my views on a wide variety of topics including Field of Dreams ballfield, the relationship between the Town and the school district, the quality of the streets in Gilbert and lots of questions about the budget - would we favor a tax increase (NO!)? What are the top fiscal priorities for the town? What would you cut out of the budget?

All in all, a very productive week! Lots of behind the scenes work still going on...including a new look to this website...coming soon! **Don't worry, I'll be keeping the blog updates going as I've received great feedback about the need for timely information! Thanks for all of your support! - Jenn

Gilbert Chamber of Commerce

Today was the Gilbert Chamber of Commerce forum at the Southeast Regional Library. I can't say enough about the quality of the event and the caliber of the people. We were treated well and asked relevent questions in a format that was fair and allowed for the candidates to speak freely about their personal vision for Gilbert. As part of the candidate endorsement process, the Gilbert Chamber of Commerce issued a questionnaire. My answers, as well as the answers from the other candidates can be read on the Chamber's Website. Click HERE to check out the answers. Many thanks to the Chamber and APS for hosting a great event!

SUCCESS!

We had a fantastic turnout this morning at our Campaign Kick-off Breakfast.

Heritage Academy

I had the great privilege today of speaking to the students at The Heritage Academy in Mesa, AZ. How impressed I am with the students' knowledge of the constitution and the proper role of government. They taught me a thing or two about our government and I was so encouraged by their participation in the discussion. They don't just have knowledge, they know how to apply it. Rest assured, I met with the future leaders of our country today and we're in very capable hands.

More Questions and Answers

Hope everyone is having a great week! We've been very busy this week at campaign headquarters (i.e. my living room) and there just aren't enough hours in the day to do it all. You've probably seen lots of signs up around town...we can thank my husband and lots of friends for that. They've worked tirelessly to get the signs up and it's been fun to hear my boys in the car screaming "Mom, it's you! LOOK!" as we drive around town.

By far, the best thing about this process is the people that I've been able to meet and talk with. I've learned so much from all of you and your love for Gilbert is contagious! I'm also loving aswering your questions via email too so keep them coming. I hope that you get to know me, my principles, my vision for Gilbert and my position on the proper role of government through the answers. Here are a few more of the questions and answers:

Reading your web site you note excess spending needs to be controlled. Could you explain this comment and cite me a couple examples?

1. Big League Dreams - A project that was estimated to cost $22.5 million and came close to $45 million. This is an example of a public-private partnership gone bad and Gilbert taxpayers were left holding the bag. I am not completely opposed to public-private partnerships but they must be economically feasible, they must be closely managed and there must be parameters in place that ensure tax-payer dollars are protected.
2. The Million-Dollar Marble - the town purchased a marble "ball" from Germany for the Water Tower Plaza in downtown Gilbert. Sure, it might be nice for a while - but is a million dollar ball really what Gilbert needs right now? On another note, the Water Tower Plaza park is 1/7 of an acre and took 9 years to renovate. Whenever a Gilbert project is drawn out, the cost steadily rises.
3. The town council recently voted to donate $500,000 to charity. This vote came just minutes after the town rejected a 3% pay increase for town employees (they gave the employees 2%). The additional 1% would have cost the town $800,000/year. I have no problem with personally giving money to charity, but when it comes from tax dollars - that is called a re-distribution of wealth - and it does not fulfill the proper role of government. When we've cut all overtime for police officers and we're talking about raising taxes to overcome a budget shortfall, we simply can not use tax dollars to fund charity. These are just three examples of the waste and misappropriation of tax dollars.

There are many great things about the Town of Gilbert, but if we fail to properly fund essential core services - police, fire, streets and water - town perks like marble balls and enormous baseball fields mean absolutely nothing. Particularly during this economic downturn, we need to get back to the basics and define between needs and wants.

How do you feel about Photo radar?

I’m against photo radar. Studies that have been done show that overall, the use of cameras does not decrease accidents (speed related accidents and intersection turn accidents were down but rear-endings were up) so from a safety perspective, there isn’t a benefit. I also take issue with the principal of photo enforcement – essentially if we allow the government to take pictures of us in our private vehicles, then we are opening the door to allow the government to take our picture in private homes or on private property. It becomes a question of liberty.

Your children look young from the photo. Who watches the kids while you’re away? (People want to know that your kid’s schedules won’t be upset by your new duties.)

My boys are 5, 3 and 1 and I’m loving this stage of life. Running for town council was not a decision that I took lightly – it took lots of prayer and family discussion to come to the conclusion that public service should be one of our top priorities. I am very fortunate that I have a wonderful husband who supports my desire to serve the community and picks up the slack at home. My family is my first priority – not unlike the people that I seek to represent. I am confident that I can balance the needs of my children with the duties of the town council.

I don’t live in a home owner’s assoc. but I can still get fined by the city if a random 10 inch weed popped up in the corner of my ¼ acre plus lot. Do you support Gilbert’s inch by inch move to regulate personal property?

I believe that the proper role of government is to protect our freedoms – the freedom to possess property is included. Of course we want our town to be well-maintained but we simply cannot infringe upon the rights of our townspeople to accomplish that. The water crimes bill that was passed and then revoked by the town council – made it illegal and punishable by fines to allow water to drain from property – (this could have been anything from a broken sprinkler head to a geyser) and is another example of the town government creating an ordinance without realizing the implications. Fining a citizen for a random weed is simply an infringement of property owner’s rights.

Questionnaire after Questionnaire...

I've spent the last week responding to lots of questionnaires, inquiries and issues. I'm finding that the more time I spend pondering the problems and hurdles that are facing Gilbert and the people that live here, the more I want to jump in and contribute to the solutions. I was committed to this process from the get-go but now I'm absolutely certain that serving the people - in whatever capacity I'm granted - is a great privilege and honor.

The Gilbert Chamber of Commerce and the Gilbert Small Business Alliance have an obvious interest in the town council. I think I've brought some great ideas and a fresh, new perspective to the challenges facing these entities and the people they represent. Both have said that the responses to the questions will be included on their website so I'll link it up when they're ready.

I received an email from a Gilbert citizen asking some specific questions. For the record, I don't know this person and I was so glad that he took the time to ask me questions about issues that are important to him. I won't share his name but I will share his questions and my responses - if he thinks they are important, perhaps you do too. Please feel free to email me with any questions that you have. My commitment to the Gilbert Town Council is most importantly, a commitment to you!

Pro-life or pro-choice?

Pro-life. I believe that as a moral people, we have an obligation to protect the unborn.

Republican or Democrat?

Republican. I also serve as a precinct committeeman.

Who are your favorite political thinkers/writers and why?

I love history and find the writings from our Founding Fathers - specifically Thomas Jefferson and John Adams - particularly fascinating. Their perspective stemmed from a deeply principled sense of responsibility to the vision of the United States of America. I also enjoy David Barton and his commitment to Christian values with respect to historic and current government. I am currently reading The 5000 Year Leap by Cleon Skousen and am really enjoying it.

What do you think the proper role of government is?

The proper role of government is to preserve the freedoms that our innately ours and to protect us from infringements on those freedoms. The government does not grant us the freedoms as that would imply that they would be able to take those freedoms away from us. The freedoms; to worship, to bear arms, etc. are God-given and are not to be regulated by the government -only preserved and protected.

Did you support or oppose Prop 102?

I supported Prop 102! I have been a board member of United Families Arizona for the past five years. Our organization was part of the coalition to protect marriage and through that association I had the great opportunity to write many of the action alerts for United Families, work in the call centers and organize sign distribution. It was a wonderful experience.

What should Gilbert be when we grow up?

Gilbert has the potential to be a place where we can live, work and play. The 202 corridor and the long-term plan for the Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport presents some unique opportunities to the town. We are an attractive location for businesses and employees as we maintain our small-town traditions and high-quality of life with the accessibility and convenience of a much larger city. Growth is inevitable however, we must stay true to the family values that Gilbert has been built upon and do all we can to protect the best interests of the family. My goal as a member of the town council is to represent the Gilbert family: Is it true? Is it right? Is it good for the Gilbert family? Financially, it is essential that the town get back to the basics, begin operating under budget and define between wants and needs. There are many things that make a town great to live in, but without proper funding of essential town services (fire, police, streets and water), those town perks mean absolutely nothing.

Closed Door - On the Record

Today was the AZ Republic, closed door, on the record meeting - sounds so serious doesn't it? -with the editors and reporters who are covering the Gilbert election. I will admit that I was nervous. So nervous in fact that when the bottle of water on the table was looking mighty refreshing, I didn't drink it for fear that I would spill it. But after a few minutes and a few questions, I felt myself again and the angry swarm of bees in my stomach must have settled in for a 90 minute nap.

The questions that were asked were thoughtful and the answers given by my opponents helped me to better understand their position as well. Some of the questions were (I'm paraphrasing here);

"Why are you running for town council?"

"What is the top priority for you to make Gilbert a better place to live?"

"Who do you think your target voter is and which demographic do you feel you represent?"

"As a candidate who wishes to represent the Gilbert family, is there anything that Gilbert does that you disagree with or is there anything that Gilbert should be doing better for the Gilbert family?"

All in all, I was pleased with the discussions that followed each question. When the meeting was over, I walked out with another candidate. He asked me how I thought the meeting went and I found myself smiling. "It was fun!" It wasn't Disneyland, but I enjoyed the meeting much more than I anticipated. That might be how I end up describing this entire process - "It isn't Disneyland, but it's fun!"

Oh yea...and I picked up a few of my signs from the printers which was very exciting! Look for them around town and if you don't mind, if you see one damaged or in need of repair, please email me. Thank you for your help!

Exciting Planning Meeting!

Just a quick update... we had a great planning meeting tonight and I'm very excited for the upcoming events. I said to my husband earlier today, "I'm sorry if the campaign is taking over our lives." He just laughed and said, "Yes, but isn't it fun?!!!" This is fun! We've been working hard but it really has been such a great experience. We have loved meeting so many people and working with many of our friends (new and old) to make "Jenn Daniels for Gilbert Town Council" a reality. The work - and FUN - continues!

My Turn Article

A few weeks ago, the AZ Republic asked all candidates to write an intro for themselves. My article was published in the Gilbert Republic section on January 3rd - thought I'd share with you the full content of what I wrote (some of it was edited by the Republic for space constraints).

My name is Jenn Daniels and I am excited to be a candidate for Gilbert Town Council. Running for town council is a great opportunity to increase my community involvement, to represent the Gilbert family and to connect with those who, like me, want Gilbert to thrive.

I am a wife and mother of three boys and I feel that Gilbert is the best place in Arizona to raise a family. I have a bachelor’s degree in Humanities from Brigham Young University and I have continued my education through classes at MCC and ASU. I was raised with strong values and morals and have been given the great opportunity to serve the community as a board member of United Families Arizona for the past five years.

I may be “just a mom” but I have a unique perspective and some tangible strengths to bring to our town council. I sense a real disconnect between our town government and the people of Gilbert. It is time to create and repair lines of communication. I want to clear the way for transparency within our town government and facilitate the sense of community that will only strengthen Gilbert. When decisions are made on behalf of Gilbert, we must ask: Is it true? Is it right? Is it good for the Gilbert family? Such a perspective will be well-represented if I am elected.

Gilbert is at a crossroads – growth has slowed and excessive spending requires that we immediately tighten the belt on the town’s budget. Tough economic times shouldn’t just apply to the hard-working Gilbert family. It is time to see restraint in spending along with careful planning to ensure the future economic prosperity of Gilbert. It may take a little creativity, some thinking outside the box, to bring solutions to the budget that preserve essential town services while cutting waste. I am whole-heartedly up for the challenge.

The role of government is to preserve the freedoms that are ours and to protect us from infringements on those freedoms. Especially at the local level, these principles are critically important. It’s time for Gilbert to get back to basics with an eye towards the future prosperity of our town. On March 10th vote for family values - vote for economic prudence – vote for Jenn Daniels.

Happy New Year!

Now that the holidays are behind us, I feel like I can go full steam ahead on the campaign. I'm so looking forward to the challenges that are ahead.

The AZ Republic has already published a few articles about the candidates. Click here to read the online version of the candidate intros.

*** Just a quick clarification about my bio info: In a few of the articles I had to laugh because it said I was a "self-described housewife." While I've never actually used the term housewife, I did say that I was a wife and mother which I guess to some people = housewife (for the record, I'm not actually married to my house :) ). I did notice that the reporter has changed it to say homemaker. Semantics. The bio information also says that I have no political experience but I am a precinct committeman. It just would have been better to have that little piece of info in there instead of the word "none." Oh well, I'm learning as I go!
